Shedding Light on Eco-Friendly Business Opportunities

Despite a host of negative impacts brought on by the consequences of climate change, companies can do their part by investing in clean technologies. These technologies not only help mitigate the effects of climate change but also provide an economically viable business opportunity.

The Financing Adaptation and Opportunities Session on Friday, 13th September will tackle this topic and provide suggestions as to how companies can remain environmentally responsible yet profitable at the same time.

One of the keynote speakers, Mr Edwin Khew, Chairman of the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore and Managing Director of Anaergia Pte Ltd will shed light on trends in Asia that support clean technologies, such as feed-in tariffs, energy efficiency policies and national commitments in reducing carbon emissions. He will also provide examples of how Singapore and the region have managed to integrate clean tech in different areas with attractive ROIs both in the short and medium terms.

“In recent years Asia has been playing an increasing role in helping to attract and interest global clean tech investors. With ample R&D funding available, we are one step closer towards becoming open and ready for clean tech business. With a comprehensive mix of topics at the conference, WES 2013 provides a timely and relevant platform to address issues affecting climate change today and the solutions (engineering & otherwise) to mitigate and adapt to its effects”, said Mr Khew.

Sustainability Leadership Forum to Discuss Mitigation Policies and Strategies

WES 2013 will also include a Sustainability Leadership Forum which will feature opening remarks by Prof Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large and Special Advisor, Singapore Institute of Policy Studies, Singapore.

About The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES)

The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) was formally established in July 1966 as the national society of engineers in Singapore. IES is the premier engineering institution in Singapore and is called upon by the Government to provide feedback on professional engineering matters.

IES is well represented among the faculty members of the major engineering institutions of higher learning in Singapore. Through close collaboration with the local universities and polytechnics, IES organises courses, seminars and talks for engineers and IES members to advance the continuous development of engineers.

The Institution maintains close links with professional organisations of engineers regionally and throughout the world. These include organisations in Australia, China, Japan, United Kingdom and the United States. The Institution also represents Singapore in the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) and the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP) in promoting goodwill and fellowship among all engineers in ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific region.

Through its Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB), IES obtained full signatory status in the Washington Accord (WA) in June 2006. The entry grants IES the authority to represent Singapore, the first country within the ASEAN region, which has obtained full signatory status in the WA, to vet education systems under the WA mutual recognition framework.
